49th Chief Justice of India

Following superannuation of Justice N V Ramana, Justice U U Lalit was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India, the 49th to be precise. He though slated to be having a short stint of less than three months only as the CJI, has the distinction of being directly elevated to the coveted position from the Bar, the second only in the process depicting the usual required capabilities for the highest office of the judiciary of the country. Justice D Y Chandrachud is the next in seniority to be expected to replace Justice Lalit on his attaining superannuation. Keeping high Indian traditions alive , Justice Lalit on the occasion took the “Aashirvad” of his nonagenarian father. That apart, what all are eager to know is whether there will be a revamp in the system to launch a ”all clean” drive to dispose of a long list of pending cases and his saying can really be termed as “golden” that “when children can go to school at 7 am, why not we attend courts at 9 am” generates hopes about a possible turnaround in the system in disposal of long pending cases.
