Mir Zahoor inspects Dachigam Sheep Breeding Farm

SRINAGAR: Minister of State for Forest, Environment, Animal & Sheep Husbandry, Cooperative and Fisheries, Mir Zahoor Ahmad underscored the need for introducing hybrid sheep to suffice the mutton and wool need in the State.

During his visit to Sheep Breeding Farm Dachigam, Zahoor took detailed review of the farm and instructed concerned functionaries to take due care of the sheep, besides pay concerted efforts to promote hybrid sheep among the farmers.

Mir Zahoor stressed upon the departmental functionaries to open the new and modern avenues for promotion of hybrid sheep among sheep rearers, with the direction for strict implementation of various schemes meant for sheep development in the State.

Mir Zahoor said that Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti is very ambitious to promote the animal, sheep husbandry, sericulture and agriculture sectors in the State, which not only caters to maximum needs of milk, mutton, poultry but intends to export the production to outside States. He added it  would be beneficial for increasing the income of farming community of the State.

The Minister said that several innovative initiatives including implementation of Centrally Sponsored schemes were launched and implemented in the State for boosting hybrid sheep and cattle population. He asked the departmental functionaries to work with vigor and zest for the development of animal and sheep populace and ensure that the benefits of the schemes would reach to the cattle and sheep rearers at grass root level.

During his inspection, the Minister was apprised that Sheep Breeding Farm at Dachigam is presently having above 500 Marino sheep and about 68 Rams are distributed to field organizations for cross breeding this year.

The Minister said promotion of hybrid Sheep in different departmental Sheep Farms is the priority of the Government.

Earlier, the Minister visited Laribal Trout Fish Farm and took stock of the activities of the unit. He also inspected the office of Divisional Forest Officer, Wildlife Dachigam.

Later, the Minister convened a joint meeting with the officers of the Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries and Wildlife Departments and took review of the functioning of these departments.
