JAMMU, Feb 12: While 4000 HIV positive cases have been detected in J&K, out of the total 434 persons have died of AIDS in the State so far.
This information was given in the Upper House of the Legislature by the Government, on the un-starred question of National Conference legislator Vijay Bakaya during ‘Question Hour’ here today. The Government provided a detailed reply on the status of the disease, fatalities, number of affected persons and the steps being taken to contain and create awareness among the masses.
In the written reply the Health Ministry of the State Government disclosed that there are 4000 confirmed HIV positive cases in the State as per ICIC report ending October 2013. A total 1893 full-blown cases have been registered out of which 434 AIDS deaths have taken place so far. It said that the HIV/AIDS graph in respect of J&K shows declining trend of the STI/ RTI infection along with HIV transmission among high rick group is 0.06 %.
It has been claimed that on the basis of Sentinel Surveillance Round 2012 and other studies conducted, the epidemic in J&K State is static and under control. Though J&K State falls under low prevalence group of states but is highly vulnerable due to tourism, long distance truck drivers, migrant labourers and high concentration of security forces.
Giving more details, it said that during 2011-12, 84511 general clients and pregnant women tested for HIV, 426 of them were found HIV positive. 26 pregnant women were also found HIV positive. During 2012-13 out of the total 28, 540 clients tested and 48,073 pregnant women, 331 general clients and 10 pregnant women were found HIV positive. Six Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics functioning in different districts of the State are being supported by NACO and are provided free drugs.
In J&K currently there are two fully functional ART Centres with 3018 patients in HIV care. In GMC Jammu there are 1520 male, 935 females and 187 children (Pre ART) where as in SKIMS Srinagar there are 280 male, 67 female and 17 children. On ART, there are total 1317 toal AIDS patienst in the State including GMC Jammu and SKIMS Srinagar.
