SAMBA, Mar 5: Four members of a Sarpanch’s family were among five people killed and one sustained injuries when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jamoda area near Mansar on Samba-Udhampur road.

The SUV bearing registration number JK01U-2234 was on its way to Srinagar from Amritsar Punjab when the driver lost control over the vehicle carrying six people, following which it rolled down into the deep gorge in Jamoda area near Mansar on Samba-Udhampur road early this morning.
Five of the occupants died on the spot while another received injuries. The accident took place as driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve in Jamoda area near Mansar on Samba-Udhampur road.
After getting information about the accident, police team led by SHO Samba Inspector Deepak Jasrotia along with his team rushed to the spot and evacuated the injured to District Hospital (DH) Samba for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were also retrieved from the deep gorge and shifted to mortuary of District Hospital Samba.
The deceased were identified as Gulzar Ahmad, son of Khaliq Butt, his wife Zeena Begum, daughter Masrat and son Mohammad Iqbal, all residents of Brah Tehsil Shangus, District Anantnag and Mohammad Akbar Chopan, son of Abdul Karim Chopan, a resident of Baihama Qazigund District Kulgam, while the injured was identified as Saqib Ahmad, son of Abdul Rehman, a resident of Brah Tehsil Shangus District Anantnag.
After conducting post-mortem, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to legal heirs for last rites.
Meanwhile, Lt Governor of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Mansar, Samba. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured”, Sinha wrote on Twitter.
Terming the accident as ‘unfortunate’, Deputy Commissioner (Samba) Anuradha Gupta said four of the deceased were family members of Mushtaq Ahmad, Sarpanch Brah-B Constituency of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
“Police received information about the accident around 6.30 am and immediately launched a rescue operation. Mushtaq’s father Gulzar Ahmad, mother Zeena Begum, brother Mohammad Iqbal and sister Masrat along with another person Mohammad Akbar Chopan died in the accident”, she said.
She announced immediate relief of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured from the Red Cross fund.
However, a case under relevant Sections has been registered at Police Station Samba and investigation started to ascertain the cause of the accident.
