4 injured as iron bridge collapses, inquiry ordered

RAMBAN, May 6: A 300-metre iron bridge, constructed by IRCON over a stream near the longest under-construction railway tunnel in India, collapsed at Higni area today, prompting the State Government to order an inquiry into the accident.
As per police sources, at around 11 am today, two dumpers, loaded with construction material for the railway tunnel, were crossing the bridge over Nallah Bishlari at Higni area when it collapsed, resulting in injuries to both the drivers and their conductors
After getting information, police team rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to Critical Health Centre (CHC) Ramsu, from where they were later referred to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Banihal for advanced treatment.
The injured persons have been identified as Mohammad Younis, son of Mohammad Ashraf of Hewagan Magarkote, Sajjad Ahmed, son of Nazir Ahmed of Maligam, Wasim Akram, son of Tariq Katoch of Linga and Mehraj Shabir, son of Shabir Ahmed of Hewagan.
A case under relevant Sections has been registered at Ramsu Police Station and investigation started.
It is to mention that the bridge was constructed in the year 2008 on the approach road leading to the 13.5 km under-construction railway tunnel, which will be the longest in the India after completion, between Khari and Sumber in Ramban district.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tariq Ahmad Ganie inspected the site on accident and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The inquiry would be conducted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. He has to submit his report within 15 days, an official said.
Minister for Disaster Manag-ement, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Javaid Mustafa Mir has asked the Deputy Commissioner to inquire why safety norms were not followed and also fix the responsibility, the official added.
