170 names for appointment as judges are under process in Law Ministry:Gowda

NEW DELHI :  The Government has so far appointed 51 judges in the Supreme Court and various high courts this year and appointments of 170 more judges recommended by the collegium is under the consideration.
Talking to the All India Radio(AIR) today, Law and Justice Minister DV Sadanand Gowda said “We have received about 170 names from the collegium, we are processing the list for further action”.
This year till today, we have appointed 51 new appointments and about 87 ad hoc judges made  permanent”, Mr Gowda said.
“We can go for appointment of judges in HCs as per earlier memorandum of procedure till the new memorandum is finalised”, he said.
“In High Courts, earlier sanctioned strength was 906, we increased it by 25 per cent..,..at present,  sanctioned strength is 1065”, the Minister added.
“No delay is caused by the government side, that much I can say..,..I don’t want to put anything on anybody..,..Central Government cannot be pin-pointed for vacancies in subordinate courts..,..The High Court and State Governments should fill up that”, he clarified. (AGENCIES)
