SRINAGAR, Mar 5:
Finally rain in plains ended the long dry spells in the Kashmir valley, where upper heights received fresh snowfall today.
A Met department spokesman has predicted scattered snow and rain during the next 24 hours. However, Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region continued to freeze as the minimum temperature remained sub zero.
The summer capital, Srinagar, also witnessed rain this afternoon coupled with winds resulting in drop in the maximum temperature for the first time after about two months dry weather. After witnessing above normal minimum temperature, people woke up to a relatively cold morning as compared to past about a month when the mercury remained above normal.
Due to above normal mercury, presenting, spring-like weather conditions during February, few hundred tulip in the Asia’s largest garden on the foothill of Zabarwan hills, overlooking famed Dal Lake, had bloomed. However, lakhs of tulips are yet to bloom in the garden, major attraction for tourists and locals.
There could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 16 and 5 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in the city. The maximum temperature in the city yesterday was 8 degree above normal.
The holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery, where the annual yatra will commence from June this year, received moderate to heavy snowfall since last night. Reports of snowfall were also received from Panjterni, Pisso top, Sheshnag and Mahaguns.
However, Pahalgam was cloudy and there is possibility of rain any time, a hotel owner told UNI over phone this afternoon. However, the minimum temperature was still three degree above normal while the maximum was seven notches above normal yesterday.(Agencies)
