34 pc polling recorded in Anantnag bypoll

ANANTNAG: Despite boycott call by separatists, 34 per cent polling was recorded in Anantnag constituency, where by-election was held today, amid unprecedented security arrangements.          However, it was over five per cent less than 2014 elections, but about 16 per cent more than Parliamentary election in the constituency in the same year, when Chief Minister Mehbooba Muti got elected to the Lok Sabha.

The polling remained peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the constituency. Polling, which started at 0700 hrs on a very dull note, later picked up as the day progressed in the constituency, where Ms Mufti is among the eight candidates, seeking mandate.          Meanwhile, many Kashmiri Pandits casted their votes at a polling station after about 30 years in Anantnag. Addressing a press conference, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Shantmau said 34 per cent polling was recorded in the constituency.

He said out of total 84067 electors, including 4229 migrant voters, a total of 28446 cast their votes during the polling period, which started at 0700 hrs and concluded at 1800 hrs. (AGENCIES)
