3 militants killed, operation on in Kupwara woods

SRINAGAR :  Three militants, believed to be foreigners, were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in the  frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir, a Defence ministry spokesman said today.
The operation was going in the dense forest when the reports last came in,  Colonel N N Joshi said.
He said on a tip-off about the presence of militants in the woods at Gujarpati Putshahi Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara, Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint operation  early this morning. When the security forces were moving towards particular area in the woods, militants hiding there started indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
Security forces also retaliated and in the ensuing fierce encounter, three militants were killed. They said the identity of the militants was being ascertained and it is believed that they were foreigners.
The entire forest areas has been sealed from all directions to foil any attempt by militants to escape, he said adding that some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the slain militants.
The encounter ensued two days after Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag visited Kupwara, where he was briefed about the overall security situation on the Line of Control (LoC) as a large number of militants are waiting across the border to sneak into this side following melting of snow on upper heights.
