India’s sugar output up 7.70 pc at 27.39 mn tonne so far in 2025-26: NFCSF

NEW DELHI, Apr 15 : India’s sugar production rose 7.70 per cent so far in 2025-26 season to 27.39 million tonne on higher output in Maharasthra and Karnataka, cooperative body NFCSF said on Wednesday.

The output stood at 25.43 million tonne in the year-ago season. Sugar season runs from October to September.

According to the latest data released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF), output in Maharasthra — the country’s top producer — rose 23 per cent to 9.92 million tonne as on April 15, as against 8.06 million tonne a year ago.

The output in Karnataka — the country’s third largest producer — too rose 16.70 per cent to 4.71 million tonne from 4.04 million tonne.

However, the production in Uttar Pradesh — the country’s second largest producer — declined about 2 per cent to 8.92 million tonne year-on-year.

The average sugar recovery was higher at 9.55 per cent till April 15 of this season as against 9.37 per cent a year ago.

The sugar output so far has surpassed total 26.2 million tonne achieved in 2024-25 season.

Out of 541 mills that operated, the crushing operation was on in 21 mills, while the rest were closed. (PTI)
