Srinagar Jan 2: The Government today released two mainstream leaders from house arrest and equal numbers of them will be released tomorrow while daughter of former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, was today detained at her residence.
Two leaders of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Rafi Ahmad Mir and Abdul Majeed Paddar were released today from house arrest after around five months. They were put under house arrest in August last year ahead of abrogation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
Two more leaders – former legislator Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen and former PDP legislator Mohammad Ashraf Mir, who were released from Sub-Jail MLA hostel last month, will be released from house arrest tomorrow.
Government released five politicians – Zahoor Mir, former PDP MLA from Pampore, Dr Ghulam Nabi, NC leader from Tral, Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar, former NC MLA from Ganderbal, Yasir Reshi, former MLC and Bashir Mir, PDP leader from Kangan- from MLA hostel sub-jail last week. However, they were kept under house arrest.
Three more former legislators-Yawar Mir, Noor Muhammad and Shoaib Lone- were released from sub-jail and house arrest few months back. Prior to that Muhammad Syed Akhoon and Imran Ansari were also released on health grounds.
Government yesterday allowed two NC leaders – general secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar and his son Salman Sagar – to attend the funeral prayers of Sagar’s father-in-law.
And today three detainees at MLA hostel – Bashir Ahmad Veeri of NC, Mohammad Yusuf Bhat of PDP and Ali Mohammad Dar of NC -were taken to SMHS hospital after they complained some uneasiness. However, they were later discharged and shifted back to sub-jail.
And daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, Iltija was today put under house arrest after she tried to visit the graveyard of her grandfather and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Iltija was scheduled to visit mausoleum of her grandfather today in Bijbehara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. She was scheduled to visit graveyard of her grandfather days ahead of his fourth death anniversary on January 7.
However, she claimed that she was barred from moving out of her residence at Gupkar road in Srinagar. “I approached to the concerned authorities to get permission to visit the mausoleum of my grandfather, but the permission was denied,” she said.
She wanted to hold a press conference but was not allowed as police had locked her residence from outside and didn’t allow anyone to go in or out.
