JAMMU, July 3: Alertness of Jammu police during the ongoing Shri Amarnath Yatra led to the busting of the international drug cartel operative between the narcotic smugglers of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Quwait through Jammu and Kashmir.
Revealing the details of the racket in a press conference here today, Superin-tendent of Police (SP) City, Dr Vinod Kumar said that during checking in view of the ongoing Shri Amarnath Yatra, police personnel from City police station led by SHO Inspector Shakti Sharma under the supervision of DySP City Vivek Shekhar Sharma succeeded in busting international drug cartel with the arrest of four persons including two Keralites, who were trying to smuggle the high quality brown sugar from the bordering Poonch district to international market at Quwait.
He said that during checking at Residency Road, the cops from City police station subjected four persons to questioning, as they were moving under suspicious circumstances, adding that the persons failed to give satisfactory reply.
“Stinking something fishy, cops subjected the persons and their belongings to frisking”, he said, adding that during checking, police recovered 3 kilograms of fine quality brown sugar valued at around Rs 5 crore in the international market and arrested all the four persons, who have been identified as Mohammad Farooq and Javed Iqbal, sons of Alam Din, Nawaf Khan, son of Nawab Khan and Mohammad Ajmel Roshan, son of Hanif, both residents of Kerala. “Rs 10,000 cash, four mobile phones and five sim-cards including one given to the arrested accused by a Kerala based drug dealer were also recovered from their possession”, SP stated.
The brown sugar was received from PoK near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district by a Mendhar based drug dealer, who handed over the consignment to Rajouri based persons and told them to handover the same to the arrested Keralites, who had reached Jammu via air and bus routes yesterday, he said.
“Keralites were directed by the drug dealer from their native State that as they reach New Delhi from Jammu with brown sugar, they will receive a call from a person from Quwait, who will direct them where to deliver the consignment”, he said, adding that before the drug dealers manage to smuggle the consignment to New Delhi, they landed in police net.
He informed that the racket is being handled by a Quwait based person, who was making international calls through internet and was guiding these arrested narcotic smugglers how to bring the consignment to New Delhi for further smuggling the same to Quwait, he said, adding that a major international racket could be cracked after disclosures of the accused as their interrogation was still at preliminary stage.
The arrested smugglers were being quizzed to ascertain names of the conduits to whom they had to hand over the consignment at New Delhi for further smuggling of the same to Quwait and the persons operating the drug trade from India from tehsil Mendhar of District Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala.
He stated that all the angles involved in the racket are under investigation after registration of First Information Report (FIR) Number 52/16 under Section 8/21/22 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at City police station.
