2 injured; cars, houses, crops damaged in thunderstorm

Srinagar, July 3: Two persons were injured and several cars and houses were damaged after branches of trees fell on them due to strong winds and thunderstorm this evening in parts of Kashmir.
Two persons were injured after the rooftop of Hanfia Complex at Kralkhud area of Srinagar city was blown away due to the high velocity winds. They were immediately removed to nearby hospital.
The tents used by the Amarnath yatris at Pantha Chowk in Srinagar outskirts were also damaged due to the windstorm. However, the yatris putting up in these tents were immediately shifted to SDA Complex Pantha Chowk, Srinagar.
Several cars were damaged in Hazratbal, Habbak, Zakura and its adjoining areas after branches of many trees broke off due to the wind and thunderstorm.
Some cars were also damaged inside the Kashmir University campus at Hazratbal after the branches of a Chinar tree broke off to the winds and fell on the parked vehicles.
Strong winds coupled by a short spell of heavy rains this evening also damaged a tin-shed and an electricity transmission line in Munawarabad area of Srinagar.
Several roofs of residential houses were blown away due to winds while as other buildings, shopping complexes and boundary walls of many structures also collapsed in Beerwah in Budgam district.
The boundary wall of Police Station Beerwah collapsed after branches of a tree broke off and fell on it. The building of a Block Development Officer Beerwah also got partially damaged after branches of a chinar tree fell on it.
The hailstorm damaged crops at various areas of Beerwah. Thunderstorm coupled with heavy rains smashed windowpanes of several residential houses in the area.
The electric poles were also uprooted at several places leading to breakdown of power supply in various part of the Valley.
There was waterlogging at several places due to heavy rains that lasted for about 20 minutes. The heavy rains led to poor visibility and traffic jams at places.
