JAMMU, Mar 26: The 2-day workshop on ‘Convention on Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women’ concluded here today at Government Women College (GWC) Parade.
The workshop was organised by Centre For Women Studies, of the college.
Minister for Higher Education Minister, Mohammad Akbar Lone, was the chief guest at the valedictory function, while Member National Consultative Committee, UGC, Prof. Pam Rajput was the resource person for the workshop.
At the outset Principal, of the College Dr Hemla Aggarwal welcomed the chief guest and apprised about the aims and objectives of organising the workshop.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister underscored the need to impart quality academic and moral education to students from primary to higher education level, adding that Government has taken several measures to lay special focus on the women education by opening up schools, colleges and other professional institutions, specially for women folk.
Speaking about the status of women in the society, Mr Lone said that all religions teach to respect the women and maintain dignity and honour of females at all costs. He impressed upon women to come forward to fight for their rights and strive for entering civil and police administration, besides politics. He said women should not hesitate in taking assignments presently attended by men. He asked girl students to prepare for and face all the competitive exams like KAS, IAS, IFS and IPS and attain high status in society.
Expressing concern over the alarming rate of crime against women, the Minister said that Central Government has bought amendment in existing Act to ensure safety and security of women while State Government was also considering similar amendments in the existing laws to make this more stringent to deal with the perpetrators of crime against women.
The Minister also distributed participation certificates among the participants including Dr. Shashi Koul, Dr Nidhi Kotwal, Dr Aruna Dubey, Prof Pragya Khanna, Prof Sania Hamid, Dr. M. Zubair, Prof Raj Kumar, Dr. Maheem and many others drawn from various colleges of Jammu region.
A cultural programme was presented by the students of the college which enthralled the audience.
Dr Shivani Suri presented review of 2-day workshop, while as Dr Shashi Koul presented vote of thanks.
Later, Minister accompanied by Principal, Dr Hemla Aggarwal and other senior faculty members went round the college campus and took stock of the functioning of several vital sections.
