JAMMU, Aug 27: Legal Metrology Department today booked 14 traders under different provisions of Weights & Measures Act and realized fine of Rs 10,500 from the defaulters for using unverified/defective weighing instruments during commercial transactions and selling pre-packed commodities without being marked with mandatory declarations.
According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Legal Metrology (Consumer Protection), the drive was conducted in R S Pura, Dablet, Seoura and Bishnah to check the accuracy of weighing machines used by the traders while selling goods to the consumers.
As per rules, it is mandatory for the traders to get all the weighing machines & weights re-verified from the department at the periodical interval so as to ensure the accuracy of weighing.
More than 35 establishments dealing with provisional stores, Kiryana items, feed and hardware stores were checked by Inspector Mohisin Khateeb and 12 traders were booked for using unverified/defective machines and 2 traders booked for selling hardware items to the consumers without marking of MRP, which is one of the mandatory declaration to be written on the products.
A sum of Rs 10500 was realized by the department as a composition money from the defaulters. The department has appealed to the traders not to indulge in malpractices to cheat the gullible consumers and charge the price as fixed by the manufacturer or as fixed by the competent authority.
