SRINAGAR, Aug 27: High Court today directed the Kashmir University to return the 209 items of manuscripts and some Tibetan monuments to the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums lend to its Central Asian Museum on loan in 1980.
A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur directed the varsity’s Vice Chancellor to hand over the manuscripts and asked its counsel advocate Javaid Ahmad Kawoosa to submit compliance report in this regard within two weeks.
The bench was hearing a petition regarding preservation, protection and maintenance of monumental items.
“These 209 items and some Tibetan manuscripts were handed over to Kashmir University’s Director Central Asian Museum on loan in 1980 vide order no. 25-08-1980,” said the report submitted by Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums through its Additional Advocate General Shabir Ahmad Naik.
The court observed an FIR has been registered in Police Station Rajbagh over the theft of Holy Quran after advocate Naik apprised the court on its theft.
The report mentioned 22 stolen items have been recovered from Anti-Corruption Department when advocate Naik informed the court about stolen items.
“Some items have been in the custody of Shimla Museum and a letter has been addressed to the Director Shimla Museum by Director AA&M, Srinagar, whose response is still awaited,” the report said.
