MENDHAR, Aug 5: At least 14 persons were injured, four of them seriously when an over loaded Tata Sumo skidded off the road and fell into a small gorge in Mendhar area today.
Reports said that the mishap took place when Tata Sumo No. JK-12/ 1194, carrying 25 passengers was on way to Pathana Teer village of Chhatral, from Mendhar. The vehicle having capacity of 10, was loaded with 25 passengers. Some of the passengers were travelling on roof top of the vehicle while others had climbed at the back, holding carrier.
As the vehicle had travelled nearly 13 kms and reached at Nakkar in Chhatral, the driver started attending a Mobile phone call. He continued driving and attending phone call on this hilly road. A passenger objected and asked him not to talk on phone while driving and concentrate on driving. The driver expressed resentment and looked behind towards the passenger in anger and in between the vehicle rolled down. The driver jumped out of the vehicle and escaped from the spot.
Immediately after the accident the locals of the area rushed towards the spot. They also informed police. The police party reached there and they shifted injured to the local dispensary and some to Sub District Hospital Mendhar. At least 14 persons were injured and some of them were discharged after providing first aid. Four seriously injured persons admitted to Mendhar hospital were identified as Sayeda Bukhari, Adshan Ali, Shaheen Anjum and Azra Khatoon, all residents of Pathana Teer village. The police registered a case against the driver and started manhunt for him. It said that driver’s negligence resulted into the accident on this hilly road.
