JAMMU, June 26: During the COVID-19 pandemic period, 126 drug peddlers have been arrested so far and 86 cases were registered besides contraband worth lakhs of rupees have been recovered from their possession which includes heroin, poppy straw, cannabis and other intoxicants.
Giving details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Shridhar Patil said that a campaign has been launched by the police against the drugs in police stations across the district so that action should be taken against drug smugglers in every area and youth cannot get intoxicated. A case is registered on behalf of the police after recovering the goods at almost everywhere, he added.
Vehicles coming from Kashmir are rigorously investigated by the police on special points set in Nagrota and Jhajjar Kotli areas in which the police thoroughly investigates goods being transported on the route, SSP said, adding that in the last few days, police caught many such vehicles.
“Smugglers from not only the UT J&K but also from Punjab were caught. Two days ago, smugglers were caught from Narwal and Channi Himmat areas. Similarly, other police stations including Gangyal, Gandhi Nagar and Janipur have also caught smugglers with heroin”, Patil added.
Reports on these cases are taken every week from all the police stations and every attempt is made so that the smugglers caught with drugs cannot even get bail, because if they get bail soon, then it increases the spirits of the smugglers, SSP added.
SSP further talked about the importance of sensitizing the youth about the ill effects of drugs. He made an earnest appeal to the public at large to strictly keep a close watch on their wards, especially school going children, in order to keep them away from the evils of drugs. He also laid emphasis upon general public to keep an eye on those unscrupulous elements who are selling the poison in the form of drugs to innocent school going children and advised them to share all such information regarding such elements with the nearest police stations.
Seeking support of the civil society to eradicate menace of drug abuse, SSP said that cooperation of every section of society is must to liberate our younger generation from the yoke of drug addiction.
