JAMMU, May 19: Senior BJP leader and Team Jammu Chairman Zorawar Singh Jamwal has called for setting up of Rehabilitation Centres for drug de-addiction in all 20 districts in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and strengthening of the Prosecution Wings of Jammu and Kashmir Police to ensure convictions and strict punishment to the drug peddlers.
In an interview to Excelsior News today, Jamwal said if Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is serious about the rising drug menace, he should order setting up of Rehabilitation Centre in every district of Jammu and Kashmir on top priority.
“This will help in rehabilitation of the youth who have fallen into the trap of drugs,” he said.
Blaming Pakistan for sending consignments of narcotics into Jammu and Kashmir, Zorawar Singh said the administration has now strengthened police and all security agencies and consignments smuggled from across the border including through drones are being seized.

“The punishment to drug smugglers and suppliers should be such that others start thinking before taking to the narcotics trade,” he asserted.
Recalling his meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in November last year as the Team Jammu Chairman to brief him on the rising drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir, Jamwal said the LG was very much concerned and had dropped indications about major drive against the menace.
“We haven’t seen in any other State/UT the Constitutional head (the Lieutenant Governor) himself going to each and every district of Jammu and Kashmir and leading Padyatras to finish the drug menace. Earlier, Manoj Sinha was known as ‘Vikas Purush’ but now he is known as ‘Loh Purush’ also,” Zorawar Singh said.
However, Singh is of the view that 100 days Nasha Mukt Abhiyan launched by the Lieutenant Governor should be extended till the drug menace is completely finished in Jammu and Kashmir.
At the same time, Zorawar Singh called for strengthening of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) especially the deployment of women personnel in the wing to effectively tackle the narcotics smugglers. He said the police personnel doing good work against narcotics smuggling should be facilitated.
“Had the then Government in 2014 taken note of the Team Jammu briefings, thousands of youth who fell victims to the drug menace could have been saved,” Zorawar said.
