CHANDIGARH, June 7: A hard-hitting book titled, “Kashmir Insurgency: Deconstructing the State Response – Revisiting 1989-90”, authored by retired Army officer Col Yoginder Kandhari, was released today at the Chandigarh Press Club.
A statement said the book explores the causes and failures behind the Kashmir insurgency of 1989-90 and the subsequent exodus of Kashmiri Pandits.
The event was presided over by former Army Chief Gen V P Malik, who praised the book for raising tough questions about the state’s failure to prevent the crisis.
“The book brings out how the culture of Kashmiriyat was replaced by Islamist extremism, leading to the Pandit exodus,” he said.
Published by White Falcon Publishing, the book draws from the author’s personal experiences, RTI disclosures, interviews with key figures, and other reliable sources.
Col Kandhari said the aim was to present an honest and fact-based account of one of the most painful chapters in India’s history.
Col Daljeet Singh Cheema, who attended as Guest of Honour, explained how Pakistan’s long-standing military policy to destabilise India through proxy war had roots in the doctrine of “bleeding India with a thousand cuts.”
Col Charan Jeev Singh provided a summary of the book, pointing out how institutional failure, media silence, and weak leadership made the situation worse. Several other retired officers including Col Jagdeep Singh, Col Raman Kapila, and Dinesh Kapila also shared their experiences from Kashmir, adding depth to the discussion.
White Falcon MD Navsangeet Kaur spoke about the challenges of publishing such a sensitive and detailed work. She praised the book’s depth and relevance in today’s times.
The event was anchored by Renuka Dhar. The book is now available at major bookstores and online platforms.
