Srinagar, Feb 5: The new Guinness World Record has been created with the making of around 38-feet high Igloo restaurant at the world-famous ski-resort Gulmarg, breaking the earlier record for the same that was set in Switzerland.
The world’s biggest Igloo restaurant has been started by the Kolahoi Green Group of Hotels and Resorts in Gulmarg. It is the same hotel that also made Asia’s biggest Igloo café last year, attracting tourists as well as the locals.
Sayed Waseem Shah who is the owner of the hotel and the creator of the Igloo said that he was inspired by the concept of making Igloos in Switzerland, where, he said, he thought of introducing the same in Kashmir.
“I thought, we too can do it keeping that fact in view that we receive ample snowfall in Gulmarg, and with the temperature remaining low, that can prove to be a determining factor,” he said.
He said that last year, he made Asia’s biggest Igloo “And this year, I have made the world’s biggest Igloo which has the height of 37.5 feet and 44.50 feet diameter,” he said.
Shah said that the biggest so far in Switzerland, which has been recorded in the Guinness World Record is 33.80 feet tall. “The one that we have made is bigger from that,” he said.
He said that the one made last year, had space for 4 tables, accommodating 16 people and the one made this year, he said, has a space for 10 tables, accommodating 40 people at a time.
“It has been created in 2 steps and took the labour of 64 days while as 25 people worked round the clock, consuming 1700 man-days,” he said.
It is to be noted here that the thickness of the Igloo is 5 feet and it is expected that will sustain for March 15, “it will be shut after that,” he said.
The employees who worked in making the Igloo said that they wanted to serve our guests uniquely while the sheep hides have been used to make a person sitting on snow feel warm.
Also, there is a traditional touch that has been kept along and is felt as the guests step inside the igloo.
“The insides have been decorated with the traditional art and cultural items and make one feel to have entered a different place altogether,” the makers said.
Those involved in the tourism industry said that such creative and innovative approaches always attract more and more people towards the tourist resorts which ultimately augers well for the business.
