JAMMU, May 8: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Jammu & Kashmir celebrated World Red Cross Daywith great pride and reverence at Red Cross Bhawan, Kachi Chawni (Jammu), Red Cross Building, Exchange Road (Srinagar) and across the Union Territory at district Headquarters were Deputy Commissioners presided over the programs.
Observed annually on May 8, the Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross Movement and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate. This year’s theme, “On the Side of Humanity,” reflects the core mission of the Red Cross: standing by communities in need, offering hope, and delivering impartial humanitarian assistance.
“Our volunteers and staff are the real heroes behind every relief effort, health drive and humanitarian response,” said Rohit Khajuria, General Secretary, IRCS, J&K Branch. “Today, we honour their courage, compassion, and tireless service to humanity. Whether in the mountains of Kashmir or the plains of Jammu, their presence has made a lasting difference in countless lives.”
As part of the celebrations, the J&K Branch organized a range of activities across the UT, including painting event at Red Cross Bhawan for students of different schools, poster making competition, First-Aid Online Training to the Soldiers of Military Hospital, Kargil, First-Aid Awareness at SKAUST, Srinagar, Menstrual Hygiene and Free Sanitary Napkins distribution camp for the female students of Government Degree College, Akhnoor (Jammu), awareness drives, disaster preparedness workshops and youth engagement programs.
In commemoration event at Red Cross House Srinagar, the Red Cross staffers and the volunteers were present. GA Qureshi (Hony Treasurer, IRCS J&K) hoisted the Red Cross flag. Addressing the gathering, Qureshi urged upon the Red Crossers to be present for the people in their most difficult times, putting humanity first regardless of race, gender, nationality, religion or political beliefs. He enjoined upon the red Cross volunteers to remain in close contact with respective Deputy Commissioners for providing prompt and effective assistance during emergencies and crisis situations.
To mark the occasion, District Red Cross Society Udhampur organized a symposium contest on the theme “On the side of humanity” in which 10 students from different educational institutions participated and threw light on the given topic. Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai was the chief guest. IAS probationer Seerat Baji, District Social Welfare Officer Kanika Gupta also attended the programme.
Reasi District Administration and District Red Cross Society Reasi celebrated World Red Cross Day today with great enthusiasm. DC Nidhi Malik was the chief guest on the occasion. Students from various schools and colleges, along with volunteers, actively participated in the event. A symposium was held in which students highlighted the importance, history, and humanitarian values of the Red Cross Society.
To celebrate the Day, an impressive function was organized by District Red Cross Committee Srinagar at Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS) Amira Kadal. DC Srinagar, Dr Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat was the chief guest on the occasion. ADC Adil Fareed; Chief Education Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, Deputy CEO, ZMO Batamaloo and Principal GGHSS Amira Kadal were also present.
On World Red Cross Day, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Ganderbal in collaboration with District Hospital (DH) Ganderbal and RED DROP (NGO), conducted a blood donation camp at DH Ganderbal, under the leadership of Abdul Nasir, (Chairman DLSA, Ganderbal), and guidance of Sheikh Babar Hussain (secretary, DLSA Ganderbal). Over 20 units of blood groups were collected during the camp.
