JAMMU, Feb 4: World Cancer Day was observed today in various educational and health institutions across the State by organizing awareness programmes, debates and rallies.
On the occasion, Lajwanti Bhagatnath Radiations of Hope (LBNROH) – a Cancer Care Foundation, organized colloquiums on cancer prevention in four Universities of Jammu region in connection with World Cancer Day. The simultaneous events were held at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Kakrayal, University of Jammu (JU), Central University of Jammu (CUJ) and Sher-i- Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu. The events in all these institutions were coordinated by Dr Deepak Abrol.
At CUJ, a debate was organized on the topic “Cancer is Preventable” in which students from various Science Departments participated. Besides, VC Prof Ashok Aima, Prof NK Tripathi, Dean School of Life Science, Prof BS Bhau, Head Department of Botany, Dr Deepak Kumar, Dr Ashok Yadav, Dr Shvetambri Jasrotia and other faculty members were present on this occasion. They highlighted the importance of cancer awareness and stressed on the need to have regular medical checkups to detect the cancer early on.
At School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, the event was held in collaboration with Sri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra and Government Medical College, Jammu. The students and scholars from Environmental Sciences, Human Genetics and School of Biotechnology participated in the event. The theme of the colloquium was “CANCER IS PREVENTABLE”.
The event at SKUAST-J was organized in the Conference Hall, Faculty of Agriculture, Main Campus, Chatha. In the colloquium, Dr TAS Ganai, Director Education, in his inaugural speech threw light on need of awareness in minimizing the occurrence of cancer cases. Dr Parshant Bakshi, Associate Professor, Fruit Science and Dr. Vikas Sharma, Assistant Professor Biochemistry briefed the students about most commonly occurring cancers, their causes and prevention by various means. A debate competition was also organized on the occasion.
World Cancer Day was observed in Government Medical College Jammu in Radiotherapy Department under aegis of UICC, Geneva. Dr Ashutosh Gupta Prof and Head, Oncology Department, gave a detailed overview of event on cancer prevention. Dr Rahul Sharma, Associate Professor, Dr Sandeep Kaur Associate Professor and Dr Deepak Abrol spoke on cancer awareness in Detail. Principal GMC, Dr Sunanda Raina was the chief guest. She highlighted the work done for improving patient care in Regional Cancer Center and appealed the public in general and patients in Particular to observe healthy lifestyle and stop tobacco use in any form.
On the occasion, an awareness camp was organized at Accidental Hospital Vijaypur in District Samba. Chief Medical Officer, Samba, Dr Rajinder Samyal was chief guest on this occasion while the incharge of the Hospital Dr Qyum was also present. The CMO, in his address asked the participants not to eat tobacco products at all and adopt a healthy life style to avoid cancer.
The Day was observed at District Hospital Ramban under the chairmanship of Chief Medical Officer Ramban, Dr Saif-Ud-Din Khan. During the awareness camp, the CMO and other speakers threw light on various types of cancer and their prevention. A special camp was also conducted regarding the screening of Breast/Cervix and Oropharyngeal at the Hospital.
To mark the occasion, a massive cancer awareness rally was taken out by Lawrence Public School students of Panjtirthi and Sidhra branches in collaboration with Global Cancer Concern India. The cancer awareness rally was flagged off by Shakuntla Joshi, Founder Principal of the School. A large number of students participated in the rally to create awareness regarding cancer related problems and it’s preventive measures. A cancer awareness camp was also organized by Global Cancer Concern India in the school premises.
Indian Army organized awareness lectures on the occasion of ‘World Cancer Day’ at DAV Public School and Government Higher Secondary School, Kalaban, Poonch district with an aim to raise awareness among the people about causes, detection, treatment and health care services for the deadly diseases that is on a rise across the country.
