‘World Breast Feeding’ week concludes

JAMMU, Aug 9: “World Breast Feeding” week organized by Department of Paediatrics, Government Medical College and SMGS Hospital concluded.
During the week, various activities including seminars, counselling/health education sessions and poster competitions for Medical and Para Medical personnel were organized by Dr Rekha Harish, Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics in collaboration with NRHM.
Dr Nivedita, Dr Anushree, Dr Annie, Dr Sanjana and Sister Harjeet Kour  spoke on Physiology, Antenatal Counselling, benefits of breast feeding, baby friendly hospital initiative and Common Lactation problems.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rekha Harish emphasised on three principles including all newborns babies should receive mother’s milk within 1 hour of birth irrespective of type of delivery, all babies should continue to receive only mother’s milk for the initial 6 months of life irrespective of any weather and after six months breast feeding should be continued but complimented with only home based foods from the family’s kitchen.
Daily counselling and interactive sessions with all the mothers, attendants and public in children OPD and all Neonatal wards were held. Poster competition was also held, in which Dr Jalpreet Kour, PG Paediatrics and Shashi Katoch, Nursing student won first prize.
Dr Indu Koul, Prof and HoD, Obstt And Gynae, Dr Sudha Sharma, Dr Surinder Kumar, Professors Obstt. and Gynae,  Dr GS Saini, Prof Paediatrics, Dr Pramod Kalsotra Prof ENT, Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital, Dr Sanjeev Digra and Dr Ashu Jamwal, Asstt Professors, Dr SS Slathia and Dr Vikas Mahajan, Lecturers Paediatrics and large number of  residents, medical students and Nurses and parents participated in the interactive session.
Dr Mohammad Razaq, Lecturer Pediatrics conducted the proceedings, whereas Dr Sushil Sharma presented vote of thanks.
