JAMMU, Jan 19: In order to acquaint the police officers of J&K police with their new role and responsibility and to aware and sensitize them with challenges faced by officers at the cutting edge level, a week long workshop on Cyber Crime commenced at Sher-i-Kashmir Police Academy (SKPA) Udhampur.
The course was inaugurated by SSP vigilance MY Kichloo who delivered lecture/presentation on cyber crime with the help of case study.
The objective of the seminar was to develop awareness about computer, networking, social media and cloud computing to understand the implications of the cyber crime and legal measures to counter it, to understand basics of cyber forensics and standard operating procedures for Investigation of cyber crimes.
Speaking on the occasion, Kichloo said that cyber crime can broadly be defined as criminal activity involving an information technology infrastructure, including illegal access (unauthorized access), illegal interception (by technical means of non-public transmissions of computer data to, from or within a computer system), data interference (unauthorized damaging, deletion, deterioration, alteration or suppression of computer data), systems interference (interfering with the functioning of a computer system by inputting, transmitting, damaging, deleting, deteriorating, altering or suppressing computer data), misuse of devices, forgery (ID theft) and electronic fraud.
He also narrated how now-a-days cyber fraudsters are looting common masses by taking their ATM pin numbers. He added that the modus operandi used by criminals is that thieves decide on their targets by getting contact numbers of random people from malls and shopping centres. They call their targets and fool them into revealing their ATM details and pin numbers. Once they have the details, they obtain a clean plastic card from the bank and get the ATM card numbers of their targets printed on the magnet strip on the back side of the card. When they swipe this card at ATMs, the machine reads it and dispenses cash. He also told about role of police in curbing such crime.
