JAMMU, Mar 19: The work on the scheme envisaging lifting of water from river Chenab is likely to commence by March 2014 and will be completed by 2016 subject to statutory clearance and land acquisition by end of current year.
This was disclosed by Minister Incharge, Public Health Engineering and Irrigation and Flood Control Minister in the written reply to the question of MLA Domana, Bharat Bhushan in the Legislative Assembly today.
The technical proposal for the finalization of Summary Appraisal (SAR) of the scheme has been framed and the land acquisition for intake works to tap 496 MLD raw (248 MLD for Phase-Ist and 248 MLD for Phase-II) at 600 meter downstream of old Akhnoor bridge besides 480 MLD capacity of water treatment plan (240 MLD for Phase-Ist and 240 MLD for Phase 2nd) at village Gurah Pattan and Master Balancing Reservoir at Gandhi Nagar has been initiated, the Minister said.
The ROW for laying of about 20 kilometer long clear water gravity mans from proposed WTP to CPS Muthi and the alignments of clear water rising mains to various distribution centres have been identified, the Minister said, adding the DPR can be framed only after approval of SAR by Asian Development Bank which has linked the funding of this project to the institutional reforms to be taken up by the State.
“The indicative cost of augmentation of water supply to Jammu city from river Chenab Phase-Ist bulk water supply is Rs 771.65 crore as per SAR prepared by Design and Supervision Consultants”, the Minister said, adding “the work is likely to be commenced by March 2014 and will be completed within 30 months and latest by 2016 subject to statutory clearance and land acquisition by the end of 2013”.
About the steps taken during the last two years to overcome the scarcity of potable water in the Jammu city, the Minister said, “as a short term measure to improve/augment the water supply in Jammu city, the department has proposed 24 new water supply schemes under the LIC Loan Assistance. Besides, the LIC Loan Assistance has been enhanced from Rs 225 lakh to Rs 400 lakh for Jammu city during the current financial year”.
