Women’s safety

Crimes like rape, molestation, eve-teasing, and outraging the modesty against women in the capital of India, all have shown upward trend in the year 2013. Some of these crimes have doubled. The Delhi Police call it a good sign arguing that previously the women did not come to police stations to register their complaints. But now after the December last gang rape, they come out fearlessly and register complaints. According to Delhi police data, a total of 1,493 cases of rape were registered in the national capital till November 30 which is more than double the number of cases registered in the same period in 2012.
This may be true partially, but in an overall estimation, it is a very sad commentary on our security arrangement as well as on the record of our consciousness of moral values. True that after the Delhi running bus rape incident, police and civil administration and judiciary all have geared up to meet the challenge of violence against women, but at the end of the day unless younger generation is made conscious about their social responsibilities and adherence to a high code of conduct, this evil may not be eradicated that soon. It is very important that moral education is introduced in the curriculum of schools and colleges and universities. At the same time, accountability has to be enforced and the convicts in cases of violence against women have to be given exemplary punishment.
