Srinagar, July 23: Women cooking and serving Mid-Day Meals (MDM) in Government Schools today staged protests demanding hike in their remuneration that they are getting from the School Education Department.
Scores of such women assembled in Press Enclave here where they raised slogans against the department, asking them to regularize their services, while as also sanction an increase in their remuneration.
“We are here to press for our demands which include a hike in our remuneration that we are getting, along with regularizing our services,” said a woman.
The women are getting a monthly of Rs 1000 as now, which they demanded should be hiked to at least Rs 8000. The protesting cooks said that if that does not happen then the Govt should shut the mid-day meal scheme.
“One cannot do anything with the 1000 rupees that we are getting monthly, imagine that we have to cook for 50-60 children at every Govt school that we are working at. We have to cook the meals and then serve the same, that takes a lot of energy and what we are being paid is meager,” another woman said.
The protesting cooks demanded that the concerned officials should resolve their issues as soon as possible; otherwise, they would be forced to take harsh steps.
