MENDHAR, Dec 8: The people from Chhajla and Mendhar areas today held strong protest against State Health authorities and the Drug Controller J&K, after a young woman died with a wrong injection here today.
Identified as 28-year-old Gulshan Kouser, wife of Aslam Din and a mother of 5 children, the victim hailing from Chhajla village in Mendhar Sub Division of Poonch died at Sub District Hospital, Mendhar this afternoon. She had cough, bad cold and little fever. Her husband works in Saudi Arabia and she came to hospital at Mendhar with her father-in-law. She was also carrying with her hardly one and half year old child.
She was examined by Dr Tejinder who prescribed some medicines and injections. The lady went to nearby Majid Medical Hall and purchased medicines and injections. As a Medical Assistant, Shahid Ahmed gave injection the lady became unconscious and fell down. The chemist and lady’s father in-law got frightened. They rushed the woman to hospital again. The doctors started treatment but Gulshan could not regain consciousness. Her health further deteriorated and finally she died after an hour.
This incident spread like a wild fire in the town. The relatives of the deceased woman from Mendhar and other areas and villagers from Chhajla reached there. They started protest demonstration. The chemist downed his shutters and went underground. The police party led by SHO Mendhar Anzir Mir also reached there. Later, SDPO Shahid Nahim also reached. The body was kept in a room at hospital.
The police later arrested Medical Assistant Shahid Ahmed from Jugaal and sealed the shop. The protesting people were demanding action against the doctor who gave prescription and also cancellation of license of the Medical Shop. They were shouting slogans against BMO Mendhar Dr Zulfkar and Dr Tejinder (Assistant Surgeon). They also alleged that Drugs Controller staff is sleeping and there is no check on sub-standard and fake medicines being sold in Chemist shops. They also raised slogans against Health Minister Ch Lal Singh.
Later, with the intervention of DC a case FIR was registered in this connection by Mendhar police. The DC directed to the SDM Mendhar to conduct postmortem of the Body by a Medical Board and hold detailed inquiry. The Hospital staff, snatched the prescription from the old man and was not producing before the police.
The people continued their protest at the hospital up to 7 pm and later, on the assurance of SDPO and SDM, they dispersed. There was no light in the hospital and candles were lit in the room where dead body was kept and later it was shifted to morgue. The people alleged that power generator is lying out of order and attendants of the patients burn candles for light in wards.
