JAMMU, Dec 1: A two-day winter school on Cloud Computing and Big-Data Analytics was organized by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at MIET, today.
Prof Vijay Kumar, Senior Professor of Computer Science from the School of Computing and Engineering at University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), USA, was the chief resource person on the occasion.
MIET and UMKC, USA have already signed an MoU for providing higher education opportunities for MIET students and engaging in joint research and development activities. The winter school was organized under the aegis of this MoU.
Principal MIET Prof S K Sharma and Joint Director, Dr Ankur Gupta formally welcomed Prof Vijay Kumar and expressed hope that such workshops would help develop capacity and capability to conduct world-class research in the region.
The workshop which was highly technical in nature covered open research issues in cloud computing and Big-Data which is a hot area in computer science. Techniques in handling heterogeneous data and deriving meaningful analytics were discussed at length and several challenges collaboratively explored.
In Cloud Computing security issues were highlighted with special emphasis on data security in correlation to location of cloud data centers. MIET faculty conducted hands-on sessions for the participants.
Lohit Kapoor from IT Department conducted a session on Cloud Sim which is a leading simulator for cloud computing while Rohit Raina, Manager, Center for Software Development conducted the session on IBM BlueMix which is a cloud-based PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) development and deployment environment for cloud applications.
Salim Qureshi, Head Computer Science and Engineering presented the formal vote of thanks at the conclusion of the workshop.
