NEW DELHI:  Sending mixed signals across the border, Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat today said Indian army is willing to respond positively, if Pakistan effectively adheres to ceasefire all along the border.

Addressing his annual press conference ahead of the Army Day, Gen Rawat disclosed that the Pakistani side has recently conveyed through the military channel it was willing to enforce the ceasefire.

The Chief said,”We told them that the words should be supported by action as on the ground and our army is for peace and tranquility.”    But he made it clear that the ceasefire would not apply for terrorists infiltrating to the Indian side.

“We will fire on infiltrating terrorists and we have conveyed this through our DGMO to Pakistani side,” he said.

Answering a volley of questions on impact of surgical strikes, he said a message was to be sent across the border and it was properly conveyed.     He evaded a direct response when asked whether the issue strikes be politically used by the ruling party.
