Why are speculations rife that the management of the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura is about to miss the third consecutive but the last and final chance of applying for getting MCI recognition of its Gynaecology Department ? It has been found that on the previous two chances, it played slow and slack , decidedly wilfully waiting for the third and the final one to meet the same fate and thus close the matter, perhaps , for ever.
It may not affect the Institute as also the management of the Institute but career of scores of medical students was going to be imperilled as they cannot apply for the fellowship programmes being offered by national and international universities. These programmes include Post Doctoral Fellowship programmes in Reproductive medicine etc being offered by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. The eligibility criteria for such prestigious programmes is holding of an MD /MS in the said discipline from an institution recognised by the Medical Council of India. It should be the endeavour of the Medical Institute to facilitate the Doctors to go in for higher studies for the overall benefit of the people. Let us hope no ‘truants’ , if of any nature, are played this time and sincere efforts are put in to get the hitherto elusive recognition from the MCI.
