That is what a Bench of the Apex Court of the country has asked the state/ UT Governments in the country where, unfortunately , being an admitted fact, very less is being done. Not to speak of welfare schemes like setting up of old age homes, payment of pensions and basic medical treatment etc, even a separate queue for elderly is very rarely seen in those offices and at those counters where they, in normal course, have to get some work done. Even in buses and public transport, many a time, elderly are found keeping standing. In fact, this is such a section of our society who due to health and old age factors cannot come on roads to demand their rightful due in the twilight of their life.
Once these reports , admittedly based on facts , are submitted by the states/ UTs to the Supreme court , the same shall reveal to what an extent the implementation process was there in respect of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act . It is a great initiative by the SC to put on due care and alert the implementation apparatus of the states /UTs within two months time which is expected to be submitted by the Union Government in a consolidated manner later. Since moral values and known ordinations in the society emanating from the growing preference to nuclear families are fast diminishing , setting up of more old age homes and basic healthcare facilities for the ”rendered superfluous” elderly in each district has become quite necessary. Many of such elderly , shockingly, are living a silent forlorn and miserable life of poverty, neglect and even proper food putting a big question mark on what the society, the Governments at the states and at the centre are doing for them.
