What a sacrilege, Mehbooba on request to rename Delhi’s Khan Market

SRINAGAR: Reacting to reports that Home Minister Rajnath Singh has received a letter from a man seeking change of name of Delhi’s famous Khan Market, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said change the name will neither change the allegiance of gangs of the market nor will it change the fact that Muslims played a key role in India’s progress.

Ms Mehbooba, who is the president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the market was named after Khan Abdul, who gave safe passage to immigrants from Pakistan to the place now known as Khan Market.

“What a sacrilege! Named after Khan Abdul who gave safe passage to immigrants from Pak to the place now known as Khan market. Renaming it to Valmiki won’t change allegiance of gangs of Khan market/ Lutyens. Nor does it change the fact that Muslims played a key role in India progress,” Ms Mehbooba wrote on micro-blogging site twitter. (AGENCIES)
