SRINAGAR, Feb 19: The General Officer Commanding Baramulla based 19 Infantry Division, Major General Ajay Chandpuria today said the weapons and devices recovered from the Pakistani infiltrators killed at the Line of Control recently were not commonly seen here.
These were being used in Afghanistan until the American troops left in August last, Maj General Chandpuria said this while speaking to a media agency in North Kashmir today.
He said until the US troops were present in Afghanistan the situation was a little different in the Kashmir valley as well. Since last August when they (US) troops left Afghanistan the terrorists who were fighting there and the weapons including night vision devices which were being used there have been passed on to Pakistan and from there to near the Line of Control alongside India.
He said, there were intelligence reports that Pakistan would try to pass these kinds of weapons through the infiltrating terrorists to this side.
He said there are about 100 to 130 terrorists waiting on the launch pads to infiltrate to this side. However due to the vigil of the troops and the deployment our intelligence network on the Line of Control, they are not succeeding in infiltrating to our side.
Despite the ceasefire this year about six to eight infiltration bids have been attempted by the Pakistani terrorists which have been repulsed at the line of control, he said.
Pakistan is hell bent on continuing its efforts for pushing militants into this side of the border to carry out terrorism activities, he said.
Maj General Chandpuria said there are about 150 to 200 terrorists at present active in the Kashmir valley as per our intelligence reports. He said 40 to 45 of them are Pakistani militants.
He said, these exclude those who are being sent for militancy after being brainwashed and some of them are being used for throwing hand grenades and for opening fire with pistol on the security forces whom we called “Hybrid terrorists” or “unidentified terrorist”.
He said the training camps which were earlier closed are again functioning in Pakistan,
Maj General Chandpuria said the situation in north Kashmir is near normal.
The recruitments of the locals into militancy have gradually come down to one third, he said and added the number of presence of the terrorists have also came down compared to the past. (UNI)
