WD may lead to snowfall

SRINAGAR, Nov 24: The Meteorological Department here today issued a fresh advisory according to which most places in the Kashmir valley are likely to witness moderate to heavy snowfall on November 28.
Meanwhile, Srinagar, the summer capital of the State witnessed a typical wintry day with cold wave conditions persisting during the entire course of the day. At the same time reports, of light snowfall have come from some of the higher reaches of the Kashmir valley while as some of the areas in plains were hit by light rains.
An official of Meteorological Department told Excelsior that a fresh western disturbance is going to hit the Kashmir valley on November 28 thereby leading to disturbance in the weather system. The official said that the western disturbance is going to seriously impact the weather system across Kashmir valley and also some of the areas of the Jammu division.
“The higher reaches of the Kashmir valley are likely to experience moderate to heavy snowfall while as the plains would be hit by light to moderate rains or snow. The snowfall is likely to be heavy in the higher reaches and mountain ranges of Kashmir valley while as there would be less impact at other places,” said the Met official.
He added that the weather system in the Jammu and Kashmir more so Kashmir valley gets disturbed due to the impact of the western disturbance. He said the impact of the western disturbance would also be felt in the Pir Panjal mountain range running across the Kashmir and Jammu divisions of the State.
“Light rain/snow would occur at few places over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir regions over the next 24 hours. In Srinagar the sky would be generally cloudy with possibility of light rain. The Jammu division would witness partly cloudy sky on Sunday (November 25),” said the Met official.
The divisional administration has already asked people to desist from travelling to some far-flung areas falling in the North and South ranges of the Kashmir valley. The divisional administration issued travel advisories with respect to areas like Gurez, Machil, Tangdhar, Keran, Kargil, Zanaskar, Kokernag, Simthan and Ducksum areas of the Kashmir valley.
In the meanwhile, mountain ranges at places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Ducksum, Kokernag, Simthan Top, Verinag, Gurez, Machil, Tangdhar, Keran, Karnah and Teetwal witnessed fresh spell of snowfall on Saturday and the preceding night. At the same time some of the district headquarters and towns witnessed light rains.
Srinagar recorded the day temperature as 13.3 degrees Celsius while as the minimum temperature was two degrees Celsius on Saturday.
