Waste Management

Sir,
This is in response to weekly column by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat titled as Learning waste management in Lockdown (Daily Excelsior 9/4/2020). A very informative piece by Dr Bhat and i would appeal authorities especially the Municipal Bodies to direct people to undertake waste management of Kitchen waste within the premises of house during this lock-down period. It is a challenging task for Municipal ground staff to reach out to each household and residential colonies. By processing kitchen and food waste within the premises of house we are doing a great service for nation by reducing the waste and utilizing the same for a good cause ie gardening and vegetable growing. Not only during lockdown period , we must otherwise also dispose of organic waste within the premises of our house by digging a pit or putting the food waste in a big drum as suggested by the author. Let Government institutionalize waste management in Jammu & Kashmir and enforce composting of Kitchen waste within house premises for those households who have 5 marlas or more land around the house. Infact Solid waste management rules of 2016 also guides to do this. In case of people having 1 kanal or more land around their bungalows especially in posh areas like Rajbagh , Nishat , Hyderpora , Pir Bagh, Gandhi Nagar , Trikuta Nagar etc, the Municipal sanitation staff of SMC and JMC both must not at all lift the wet waste or kitchen from such houses as people can easily compost the waste within the premises of their houses in such localities.
