‘War is a shared folly of mankind’

JAMMU, Oct 15: In a scenario of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, when the steady drum beat calling for war has gained momentum, the latest play by Atamjit Singh, the award winning Punjabi playwright and director, came out with a message that war in any case is nothing but a shared folly of mankind.
The winner of national awards in fields of literature and theatre, Atamjit Singh, who is known for strong political and cultural plays, was the guest of honour in the monthly edition of ‘Sahde Pruahne’, organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, held at K L Saigal Hall, here today.
The highlight of today’s program was reading his latest Punjabi play ‘Murr Aa Lamaan Tu’ by the playwright Atamjit Singh. The play is about the Indian soldiers fighting World War I, in Europe. An existentialist take on the futility of war, it emerges as a critique of politico-social and cultural notions of nationhood, nationality, patriotism which in hands of zealots have time and again wrecked the basic fabric of humanity.
The play’s in which Indian and European characters, are inextricably woven in the narrative while on one hand portrays the tragedy suffered by the Europeans, on the other the shared cultural and social roots of the Hindus, Muslims, and Sikh soldiers from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Punjab, fighting on behalf of the British.
Jenab Khalid Hussain, eminent Punjabi short story writer and the chief guest of the function appreciated Dr Atamjit as playwright, intellectual and internationally acclaimed theatre expert who has a very bold stand for humanity, brotherhood and global oneness.
Earlier, Dr. Arvinder Singh Amn, Additional Secretary, welcomed the august gathering which was attended by Jammu’s leading writers, poets, playwrights, theatre directors, actors and members of the civil society.
