Jammu, May 26: Jammu’s “most wanted” gangster allegedly escaped during a police operation in the posh Gandhi Nagar locality after a brief exchange of fire with security personnel, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, acting on a tip-off about the gangster’s movement in the Green Belt area of Gandhi Nagar, teams of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Jammu Police launched a special naka operation in the area.
“A team of Police Station Gandhi Nagar along with an SOG party proceeded to the Mini Market area near Green Belt Park, Gandhi Nagar, for operational action against suspected criminals,” said police.
During the operation, the suspects allegedly attempted to flee and rammed their vehicle into an SOG vehicle before opening fire at the police party.
“Subsequently, the suspects opened fire upon the police party and in order to protect themselves and prevent further threat to life, the SOG personnel retaliated in self-defence by returning fire,” police said.
The area was immediately secured and additional police reinforcements were rushed to the spot.
“Cognisance has been taken of crime committed, and further action as per law is under way,” said police. (Agencies)
