JAMMU, Jan 6: The Secretariat `Gherao’ programme of the voluntarily retired given SRTC workers was foiled by police when they were moving from Press Club towards Shalamar Road here today.
The VRS given SRTC workers today assembled at Press Club at around 10.30 am despite bad weather and started protest demonstration. They were shouting slogans in support of their demands which included release of 6th Pay Commission arrears with effect from January Ist 2006, Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) arrears since 1999 and pension benefits.
The retirees of SRTC under the leadership of Dev Raj Bali after holding protest demonstration for about half an hour near Press Club, started their Secretariat Gherao march. As they were half way, the police party intercepted them and foiled their protest march towards Secretariat.
Earlier, addressing the workers Bali alleged that for the last six years, they are on the roads and holding protests but the Govt has denied them their hard earned money. They termed it as criminal act on the part of Govt. He said the Central Govt even implemented even 7th Pay Commission but the SRTC workers are struggling for 6th Pay Commission arrears. He condemned the attitude of neglect of the State Govt and said that it is criminal act to deny them their hard earned money.
Prominent workers Balwinder Singh, Mohinder Singh, Prem Nath, JD Singh, BB Sharma, Gulshan Singh and Dwarka Nath also accompanied.
