Voters of Himachal Pradesh highly aware: CEC Gyanesh Kumar

NEW DELHI, Jun 5 : Voters of Himachal Pradesh are highly aware and discerning and reflect the state’s strong democratic traditions, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said on Friday.

Kumar on Friday reached Dharamshala as part of his four-day visit to Kangra and Chamba districts till June 8.

He held an interaction with booth-level officers (BLO), their supervisors, and election personnel at a programme in Dharamshala.

Kumar described BLOs and BLO supervisors as the backbone of India’s electoral system and lauded their contribution in maintaining accurate, reliable, and inclusive electoral rolls.

Stressing the importance of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign, he directed officials to ensure they reach out to every eligible citizen and identify voters whose names may not have been included in the electoral rolls for any reason.

“The credibility of elections begins with a clean and comprehensive electoral roll,” he said.

During the interaction, BLOs and field officials shared challenges with the CEC encountered at the grassroots level, particularly in identifying new voters, verifying migrant voters, and updating electoral records.

Kumar assured them the Election Commission’s full support and instructed officials to give adequate training and institutional assistance to field staff.

Citing harsh weather and snowfall in upper reaches, the Election Commission had last month skipped Himachal Pradesh from its list of states where special intensive revision of voters’ list is being held in phase III.

The schedule of the hill state will be announced later.

Assembly elections in the state are due sometime in October this year. (PTI )
