DUBAI, Oct 27: Volunteers are being sought by Indian embassy in Bahrain to help Indian workers who are reluctant to approach the police against unscrupulous employers.
Indian Ambassador to Bahrain Mohan Kumar has asked registered societies and associations to appoint a special representative to the embassy who can accompany Indian workers in resolving their issues.
Kumar made the appeal in the wake of a case in which an Indian salesman Anil Kumar Balan had reportedly locked himself in a friend’s house after his employer demanded 3,500 dinars for losses he suffered in business, Gulf Daily News report said.
Kumar, during the embassy’s monthly open house event, said many victims are reluctant to come forward and approach the police or Labour Ministry.
“There are 33 registered Indian societies and associations and we request them to appoint a volunteer to the embassy who can accompany workers to authorities and finish cases,” the ambassador was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
“Some of the workers are reluctant and cannot go directly to police or Labour Ministry, although they have issues with their employers. Each week, a volunteer will be selected from a society and asked to follow up cases,” he said. (PTI)
