Vijaypur canal turns into drain

SAMBA, Sept 21: The Ravi canal flowing in Vijaypur area of the district has turned into a drain and the stench emanating from the garbage lying in the canal is disturbing everyone.
The shopkeepers and people living along the canal are using the canal as a dustbin in the absence of awareness. They themselves are throwing trash in the canal but are cursing the Irrigation Department for this.
It seems that the shopkeepers of Vijaypur have not understood the meaning of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. There are many settlements on both sides of the canal which used the canal as a garbage bin. Though the canal is closed these days but the garbage thrown in the canal is emitting foul smell due to which the risk of getting sick has increased for the people living in the vicinity.
Irrigation Department is also sleeping over the issue despite being aware of the condition of the canal. It is duty of the department officials to set up an awareness camp in the village to make people aware of cleanliness so that shopkeepers do not throw garbage in the canal.
