Srinagar, Aug 18: Senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and Member of Parliament, Muzzafar Hussain Baig, has said the forthcoming elections in the State will pave way for the victory of the people rather than just a political party.
Addressing a public meeting at Kupwara, he said it will be the endeavour of PDP to provide a platform for political resolution, inclusive growth and empowerment of individual citizens once it is voted to power. “Victory of PDP will mean the victory of the people as it has emerged as a sole representative of their aspirations and emotions,” Baig said.
Baig said emergence of PDP in the political front of State was a historical development as it not only changed the political discourse in Jammu and Kashmir but in the entire South Asian region as well. He said after 2002 when PDP took the initiative of representing the people’s concerns it laid a strong foundation for the positive transformation of the State’s political scenario. And, it is with this mission the party looks for a greater role for itself to write new future for the State and its people, he added.
Baig, who represents North Kashmir in the Lok Sabha, said change is inevitable on the ground and the people have an important role to play to enable us to establish a new system of justice and equality in the State. “People have to continuously support the PDP so that we could transform the entire system of governance in the State,” he said and added the PDP will continue to fight for the self-respect of the people and will work seriously to safeguard their interests.
Referring to the ceasefire on the borders, Baig said it was only because of the efforts of the PDP, India and Pakistan could agree on this historical decision which has helped the people living in border areas like Kupwara significantly. He said there have been regular skirmishes on the borders soon after the National Conference-led Government took over the reins of the State.
“Unfortunately the ruling politicians remained busy in their own joys and failed to build on the gains made by the PDP during its brief tenure in the Government,” he said. He said the interests of residents of border areas are crucial for PDP’s vision of making J&K a bridge between India and Pakistan and lifting the post independence siege laid around the State.
Baig said the development of far-flung areas, like Kupwara, will be priority of the PDP once it is voted to power. He said these areas have faced a systematic neglect during the present Government in spite of having voted continuously for the NC. He said the people of these areas are still living in Stone Age because of the lack of infrastructure. “PDP will focus on the socio-economic condition of these areas and will address every infrastructure issue which the areas are presently facing,” Baig added.
