Veteran Bollywood actor Jagdeep dies

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI, July 9:
Veteran Bollywood actor Jagdeep, popularly known by cine-goers as ‘Soorma Bhopali’ of ‘Sholay’, died in Mumbai on Wednesday night, sources in the film trade said.

He was 81 and is survived by his sons Actor Javed Jaaferi and TV producer Naved Jaaferi.

Jagdeep, whose original name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, started as a child artist in films like BR Chopra’s ‘ Afsana’, .’Ab Dilli Door Nahin’, ‘Aar paar’ and ‘Do Bigha Zamin’ and later made his name as a comedian in ‘Brahmachari’, ‘Sholay'( in which he played the memorable character Soorma Bhopali ) , ‘Bade Dil Wala’, ‘Purana mandir’ and ‘Saamri’.

Bollywood actors expressed condolences on the death of the actor.

Expressing condolences, actor Ajay Devgn said, ”Heard the sad news of Jagdeep Saab’s demise. Always enjoyed watching him on screen. He brought so much joy to the audience. My deepest condolences to Jaaved and all members of the family. Prayers for Jagdeep Saab’s soul.

Director Mahesh bhattand Bollywood playwright Javed Akhtar also consoled his death. ”He was a ‘rainbow’ in our sky!! Filled our life with laughter. An outstanding actor. Goodbye Sir !,”Mahesh bhatt said.

In his condolence, Javed Akhtar said, ”Jagdeep saheb had first appeared on the screen as a winsome child Artiste in films like Do bigha Zameen . As a young man he played highly emotional n dramatic roles in films like Bhabi , patang . Comedy was his second successful inning . Great talent , underused . Good bye sir .”

Actor Randeep Hooda also expressed condolence on the death of the actor.

”Rest in peace #Jagdeep saab .. thank you for all the entertainment,”Hooda said.
