The initiative of the Srinagar Development Authority to plan for flat type accomodation in a Srinagar locality is more than welcome. The step taken by the Authority will encourage builders and planners to go for vertical expansion in the twin cities of Jammu and Kashmir. This will have for reaching consequences for people. First, it will save precious agriculture land which is being converted into haphazad colonies at a rapid speed.
Secondly, the flat types constructions will have proper road connectivity and sewerage treatment plan. This will help in overcoming civic amenities in the cities. As the population in the State is growing at an alarming rate more people will require homes. Their demands can be met only through such buildings.
However, while building such projects, the planners should identify barren land, or land which is not suitable for cultivation of crops.
The wanton conversion of farm land for commercial and residential purposes has over past sometime emerged as one of the greatest challenges in the State. The vertical expansion methodology can help us in overcoming such a challenge.
