Value addition, efficient marketing mgmt will empower farmers: VC SKUAST-J

REASI, Oct 20: Vice Chancellor (VC), Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), Prof J P Sharma today laid emphasis upon the value addition and efficient marketing management in the agricultural sector.
Sharma also stressed upon grading, packaging and branding of agricultural products. He was addressing women farmers during an interaction programme organized by KVK Reasi at village Sirah of Reasi district. Sharma told the farmers that that value addition of fruits, vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants, adoption of protected cultivation, organic agriculture and diversification in agriculture can enhance their income.
The VC also spoke on women empowerment and stressed for establishment of processing-cum- value addition units at rural level. He narrated that strenuous efforts are needed for the Atmanirbhar Bharat so that the rural people can be empowered.
He emphasised on establishment of Farmers’ Producer Organization (FPOs) with marketing linkages for the farmers’ prosperity. He also spoke on the horizontal expansion of the agricultural technologies for the betterment of the farming community.
Poona Sehrawat, an expert spoke on the value addition in marigold flowers. She said that the fresh flowers are used in the religious spots and after their use they are thrown away as a waste. She educated the farm women on the processing of marigold flowers.
Dr Banarsi Lal, Incharge, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Reasi spoke on strengthening of Self Help Groups (SHGs) for women empowerment. He urged women farmers for the micro-entrepreneurship development in the rural areas. He assured the women farmers for all possible technical support from KVK for their betterment.
Earlier, VC met with Deputy Commissioner of Reasi, Indu Kanwal Chib at her office in Reasi, where the latter apprised Prof Sharma about the ongoing efforts of the administration for the welfare of farming community. She narrated the efforts of administration for providing the necessary support to the lemon grass growers in the district.
