Valley’s oncologist performs rare gut surgery

SRINAGAR, Dec 6: In a first, doctors at a Private Hospital have performed a complex surgery on a patient with cancer in his food pipe.
The eight-hour surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by renowned oncologist Dr Qazi Ashraf at Noora hospital here.
Dr. Qazi said Haji Ghulam Nabi Bhat, aged 73 of Sopore was ailing from cancer of oesophagus (food-pipe), was not able to swallow a single morsel of food due to which he had grown weak and emaciated.
“The treatment for this type of patient is tricky and difficult as well which was never thought of and couldn’t be imagined about so far in the history of private health sector in J&K,” said Dr. Qazi.
The oncologist said the food pipe along with the cancer was removed and a new food pipe was refashioned and put in place.
“By the grace of Almighty God the patient did very well on support. This is a miracle,” he said.
Dr Qazi Ashraf said the credit for this successful surgery goes to my team of doctors viz, Dr. Mudassir Rather, Dr Javed Naqashbandi and Dr Omar Naushad.
He also lauded his teachers who diligently honed and chiseled out a surgeon out of me and all my colleagues who have supported me through thick and thin.
