Uttarakhand woman dies in Jammu, 655 new cases in J&K

11 CU students, dozen cops infected

JAMMU, Jan 8: Jammu and Kashmir today reported three deaths and 655 COVID positive cases while the Union Territory of Ladakh recorded 43 cases. The district administration Jammu declared three more micro-Containment Zones taking total to 12 in last three days indicating major surge in cases in Jammu district which alone accounted for 263 positives.
One COVID casualty and 392 cases were registered in Jammu division while two fatalities and 263 cases were reported from Kashmir valley.
An 83-year-old woman from Jharkhand, presently putting up at Jammu, died of COVID-19 at home taking Corona toll in Jammu region to 2203 and Jammu district to 1160.
Toll in other districts include 240 in Rajouri, 153 Kathua, 139 Udhampur, 137 Doda, 120 Samba, 100 Poonch, 67 Ramban, 44 Kishtwar and 43 in Reasi district.
Six more from Raj Bhawan Jammu today tested positive for COVID-19 taking number of total positives during last four days to 11. Eleven persons also tested positive for the virus at Wave Mall on Narwal Bypass today. A total of 160 persons were tested in Wave Mall during the day. Two persons from Bahu Apartments also reported positive for pathogen.
Eleven students from Central University at Rahya in Samba tested positive after which Additional DM Samba Suram Sharma declared the Varsity as anti-Containment Zone.
Over a dozen cops including from Police Headquarters were also found infected.
District Magistrate Jammu Anshul Garg has declared three locations as micro-Containment Zones. They include Lane No. 16 near Block 73 Jagti, Lane No. 2 near H No. 252 Suryavanshi Nagar Opposite Mahesh Bharti Mandir at Lower Roop Nagar and Lane Near H No. 146 Sector 6 near CRPF Ground, Channi Himmat.
Among 392 cases in Jammu division, 263 were reported from Jammu district alone.
The Jammu district was followed by Poonch where 31 persons tested positive while Kathua district accounted for 26 cases, Udhampur 17, Reasi 15, Rajouri 14, Samba 12, Doda 10, Kishtwar 3 and Ramban one.
Among 15 fresh cases reported from Reasi district, nine were pilgrims of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji shrine who were found infected on their arrival at Katra Railway Station.
Fifty nine persons recovered from the virus.
Jammu region now has 1,27,727 Corona cases. Among them, 1,23,874 have recovered from the virus while there were 1650 active positive cases and 2203 casualties.
Out of 43 new COVID positive cases in the Union Territory of Ladakh, Leh district accounted for 36 and Kargil seven.
Active positive cases in Ladakh are 241 including 204 in Leh and 37 in Kargil.
Corona count in Ladakh stood at 22413. Of them, 21951 have recovered from the virus while there have been 221 casualties—163 in Leh and 58 in Kargil.
Meanwhile, in Kashmir 263 people including few students of a Srinagar school who had gone for Skiing to Gulmarg tested positive for COVID-19 while the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir directed the authorities of the main hospitals of Srinagar to conduct COVID tests of all patients and attendants in view of the spread of Omicron.
Over a half dozen students of a Srinagar school who had gone to Gulmarg for Skiing have tested positive for COVID-19. Over a hundred students of the school left for Gulmarg for 15 days for Skiing course.
Thousands of people – locals and tourists – violating the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) celebrated the new year at the tourist destination. The students were camping around the same place. On 3rd January, one of the students met with an accident at the camp and was rushed to Srinagar’s Bones and Joints Hospital for treatment where she tested positive for COVID-19. Several students later tested positive for the COVID.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Pandurang K Pole today visited main hospitals of the city to inspect covid containment measures in view of Omicron spread.
He visited SMHS Hospital, Lal Ded Maternity Hospital, Bone and Joint Hospital, Barzulla, and DRDO Hospital Khunmoh, Srinagar.
While inspecting the COVID containment measures at Hospitals, he directed Medical Superintendents to conduct COVID tests of all patients and attendants in view of Omicron.
As the Omicron virus is spreading at an alarming rate, the Div Com enjoined on officers to increase the existing number of COVID tests to contain spread of new variant in the Valley.
He directed officers that to enforce the wearing of masks by medical and paramedical staff besides patients and attendants in the health institutions.
He also reviewed facilities available for COVID patients including availability of ventilator beds in hospitals, testing kits besides heating and other facilities. He also inspected the functioning of DRDO Hospital and the control room establishment in the hospital.
Amid resurgence of COVID-19, Director Health Services Kashmir has asked for against sanctioning of leave to the health employees.
“In order to meet out any emergency situation which may arise due to heavy snowfall and resurgence of COVID-19 in Kashmir, all the Chief Medical Officers/Medical Superintendents/Block Medical Officers are hereby impressed upon not to sanction any kind of leave to the Non-Gazzatted employees and not to forward any kind of leave case to this office in respect of Gazzatted employees other than emergency leave cases, so that the health care facilities do not suffer in the hospitals.” read the circular issued by DHSK.
“Besides, it shall be ensured that Block Medical Officers/ Medical Superintendents of District Hospitals shall not leave the station till snow situation gets normalized.” it added.
In the meantime, two persons who were infected with virus but were comorbid died here today taking the death toll in J&K to 4,537.
Those who tested positive include 133 from Srinagar, 41 from Baramulla, 46 from Budgam, 7 from Pulwama, 8 from Kupwara, 9 from Anantnag, 11 from Bandipora, 4 from Ganderbal and 4 from Kulgam.
The number of cases in Kashmir division has reached 216,238 including 212,572 recoveries and 2,334 deaths.
The number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 2,982 including 1,332 from Kashmir division
With 162 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in Jammu and Kashmir has reached 336,446 which is 97.81 percent of the total cases.
