SRINAGAR, May 12 : The Raahat Ghar, Zakura, Srinagar, run by the Guild for Service, New Delhi, celebrated its annual day function at the Government Medical College Hall here this evening.
Usha Vohra, First Lady, was the chief guest.
Referring to the captivating cultural programme presented by the children of Raahat Ghar on the occasion, she observed that it demonstrated the high talent of the children and the hard work put in by them under the guidance of Dr. Girija Dhar, Chairperson, Raahat Ghar and their teachers.
Referring to the “Faiz Ka Manzoom Safar”- a poetic journey of Faiz’s life – presented by Dr. Syeda Hameed, Member, Planning Commission of India, Dr. Mohini Giri, Chairperson, Guild for Service, Zakia Zaheer and Rene Singh, on the occasion, the First Lady observed that Faiz had been a most popular and well read poet of the 20th century. She described the presentation as superb. This poetic presentation was made by the Faiz Centre, Delhi.
On behalf of the Governor, the First Lady announced a support of Rs. 50,000 to the Raahat Ghar for carrying out extra-curricular activities for its children.
The children of Raahat Ghar presented mementos to the Lady Governor and other dignitaries on this occasion.
Anne Stenhammer, Representative and Programme Director, UN Women South Asia Sub-Regional Office, speaking on the occasion, said that her organization was working for gender equality and empowerment of women in all spheres of human endeavour.
In her welcome address, Dr. Mohini Giri, Chairperson, Guild for Service, dwelt on the activities of her organization.
Dr. Girija Dhar, Chairperson, Raahat Ghar, Srinagar, presented a brief history of the evolution and activities of the Raahat Ghar.
Prominent among those present on the occasion were Tanvir Jahan, Commissioner/Secretary, PWD (Designate), Sushma Kapoor, Deputy Regional Programme Director, UN Women, Advisory Committee Members of Guild for Service and Raahat Ghar, prominent women, media persons and children of Raahat Ghar.
